Community Boating Center, Inc.

CBC is a great place to enjoy boating – without the expense of owning a boat – and to meet new people who love to boat as well.  CBC is pleased to open our facility to kayakers and qualified sailors. We are in our 16th year of operation.  It is our hope that sailors will become part of our community and help us realize our dream of providing water access to all.

Below you will find our seasonal Open Boating hours and the requirements for checking out boats during Open Boating.

Open Boating 2012 Begins on May 1 and Ends OCTOBER 31!

OPEN BOATING REQUIREMENTS

Only the skipper of the boat must fulfill all of the following five requirements.  However, each participant (skipper, crew, and guests) must have a Medical/Liability Waiver on file for the current year. If the participant is under 18, the waiver MUST be signed by a parent or legal guardian -- no exceptions! There is NO ONE watching the water. You sail at your own risk.

Complete and sign the Medical/Liability Waiver (parent signature required if sailor is under 18)
2. Complete and sign the Boat Usage Contract (parent signature required if sailor is under 18)
3. Complete and sign a Open Boating Card at CBC (parent signature required if sailor is under 18)
4. Select which type of pass you want:
5.
Pass a proficiency test for each boat you want to sail (see below) and must demonstrate control over kayaks and stand up paddleboards before leaving the dock

Season Pass Options (includes use of sailboats and kayaks):
$299 Family Pass (2 adult and 2 youth season passes)
$225 Adult Season Pass
$85 College/Grad Student and Senior Passes (w/ID)
$25 Youth (17 and under) Season Pass

SKILLS PROFICIENCY TEST

A skills proficiency check must be performed before using CBC boats. The sailor must pass all parts of the test to get signed off for boat use. Click here to read about our boats.

CBC instructors will observe sailors:

1. Rigging the boat
2. Leaving the dock
3. Upwind sailing (with tacks)
4. Downwind sailing (with gybes)
5. Capsize of small sailing dinghies (dry roll NOT OK)
6. Returning to the dock

Proficiency checks must be performed for each type of boat and for wind conditions. If the prospective sailor does not pass both phases of the evaluation on the first attempt, a $5.00 fee will be charged for each successive proficiency check.

Check-outs are sometimes limited due to instructor availability. We do not generally have the ability to do check outs on Mondays, but you can always come down or call us at 508-992-6219 during the Open Boating hours listed above to request a check-out and we will try to fit you in. In order to participate in Open Boating, the sailor must have already completed the check-out.
