What a day at CBC!

By CBC Staff
Last Friday, March 6, about 35 volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England came to CBC for a day of service.  They completed so many projects that we had talked about here, but just hadn’t had the time to get done.  Some of what they accomplished will help us get ready for spring sailing, some projects will help us this summer and others were general facility upgrades.  We are so fortunate that they reached out to us! Volunteers came from the following Units: Sector Southeastern New England Detachment, ANT Bristol, ANT Woods Hole, MSD New Bedford and the Coast Guard Cutter TYBEE.  We thank each and every one of them for the time and effort that they spent here! Peter Pereira came out and took some great photos of the volutneers at work.  You can check them out here on the Standard Times’ website. They heard about our needs through our posting on Volunteer SouthCoast.  This website that matches volunteers with organizations and opportunities is a  project of the United Ways of Greater New Bedford, Greater Fall River and Plymouth County. We started posting more on Volunteer SouthCoast in 2019, when we became a Certified Service Enterprise through Points of Light after completing the training put on by the Mass Service Alliance.    We are so fortunate to have so many awesome community partners!  Because of their help and support, we are able to do even more for the youth of Greater New Bedford!

With a more strategic and systematic approach we are able to leverage and connect more volunteers to our work and mission here at CBC, and connect those volunteers to the community as a whole.”

Palmer’s Island

At CBC, we strive to teach our participants how to be good ocean stewards and we know that an important part of that is that we lead by example. As part of our continued efforts on this front, we have committed, along with our partners at Operation Clean Sweep, to get many years’ worth of debris off of Palmer’s Island in New Bedford Harbor before the end of this year.
