Sailing Into Knowledge

We teach math and science through sailing

STEAM

The weather above, the water below, everything in-between and on the boat can provide daily, real-world science lessons. Using sailing as a medium, our program provides youth with hands-on integrated learning opportunities that inspire interest in fields of study like physics, marine biology, robotics, technology and more.

TEAMWORK!

The power of the wind can be harnessed with teamwork and some simple machines. Sailing encourages individuals to work together as harmonious teams and gives students a liberating way to exercise and overcome challenges together.

OCEAN STEWARDSHIP

Our lessons teach our profound stake in a healthy ocean that is free of trash and marine debris and relate to larger ocean literacy ideas such as how humans and the ocean are inextricably interconnected. We aim to inspire students to become environmental stewards and socially responsible individuals.

SAILING

Every time a student steps into a boat, pulls the tiller, or trims a sail they are experiencing hands on, powerful lessons. The complexity of sailing creates a challenging, yet alluring drive to succeed and understand the forces at work in the sport. Harnessing the wind, waves, and the mechanics of sailing are natural motivators for all youth to pursue sailing (and science) as a life-long interest

Sailing Into Knowledge

Community Boating Center of New Bedford is collaborating with local schools to offer programs teaching ocean stewardship, sailing, seamanship and how they are connected to science, technology, engineering and math. CBC has teamed up with the New Bedford Public Schools, Alma Del Mar, Renaissance, Global Learning Charter Public School, Nativity Preparatory School, and Our Sisters’ School to offer programs during and after school to their students. The programs are tailored to each school’s values and expectations of their students.

REACH and STEAM

In the Fall of 2013 CBC launched its Sailing into Knowledge trial program, based on REACH, US Sailing’s STEM education program. Using sailing as a medium, REACH provides youth with hands-on integrated learning opportunities that inspire interest in fields of study like physics, marine biology, robotics, technology and more. REACH uses inquiry-based instructional approaches that place students at the helm of the learning process and assigning teachers the role of learning facilitator, coach and modeler.  Sailing into Knowledge ties directly into CBC’s most core value, that the kids come first and they are the focus of each and every activity.

Skateboard Building with Anchor Academy
