Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Community Boating Center continues to provide interactive programs to local students. In collaboration with Sea Lab, CBC is able to deliver virtual programming to every 4th grade student in New Bedford Public Schools over the course of the 2020-2021 school year.

Our program focuses on marine debris. What it is, where we can find it, how it breaks down, and its impact on our world. Kim Calheta’s 4th grade class from Brooks School took part in CBC’s first ever virtual Sea Lab program. Twenty-three students joined in both from within the classroom and their homes.

Using a mix of Google Meet and Kahoot, the students were able to follow the lesson while constantly interacting with each other and the CBC instructor. It is great to see these kids staying engaged throughout the  lesson. At the end of the session, students compete with one another to answer a series of questions based around the topics discussed. They are so excited when they realize that they, as individuals, can make a difference in the world. By the end of this school year, the Community Boating Center/Sea Lab program will have impacted over 1,100 4th grade students.
