Cooper's Ocean Beats - NB Whaling Museum

A Beat Maker Project
Visit the Ocean Beats Website

My four year old son, Cooper, and I tried the Ocean Beats activity on the Whaling Museum’s website.  This activity allows people to hear hundreds of different sounds from 32 different species including whales, dolphins, seals, and even a walrus!

After spending some time listening to all the different animals, Cooper settled on his top four. His favorites included the Beluga Whale, Bottlenose Dolphin, Bearded Seal, and Humpback Whale. The one that he found most fascinating was the Narwhal. Cooper selected two sound clips from each animal to download. Together we used Garage Band, a free sound-mixing program, to combine the sounds together to create a one of a kind form of oceanic communication. Once we were finished with our creation, we submitted our clip to oceanbeats@education.whalingmuseum.orgcreate new email

Not only was this an amazingly fun activity, it also sparked my son’s interest in what was out in the ocean. We spent the next 30 minutes or so discovering facts about Narwhals like they can grow up to 4,200 pounds and that their horn is actually an enlarged tooth. I highly recommend this activity to both kids and parents alike. It is both educational and a lot of fun!
