Osprey Fun at CBC

The Clark’s Cove Osprey have made their return back to CBC! The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) – also called sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk, is a fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor that’s wingspan can reach over 180cm long, that’s six feet!

The osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. One of the pairs in Clark’s Cove, has been nesting on an old wooden structure just east of our pier. As its other common names suggest, the osprey’s diet consists almost exclusively of fish.

Along coastlines, lakes, and rivers almost worldwide, the Osprey is often seen flying over the water, hovering, and then plunging feet-first to catch fish in its talons. After a successful strike, the bird rises heavily from the water and flies away, carrying the fish head-forward with its feet.

Designed to Be an Osprey Worksheet!

Explore and learn about what makes the Osprey an expert at catching fish.
Ospreys only eat fish, and have several adaptations to catch them. To be successful they must first
be able to see the fish, then be able catch the fish in the water, and finally carry it away and eat it.
