Art & Marine Debris

When you’re looking at trash along the side of the road or at the beach, you are probably thinking about how ugly it is, not about art!  Despite this, there are lots of connections between the worlds of art and marine debris and there are lots of ways that you can connect the two.  If you need ideas to get you started, we’ve included some below.

Want to try it yourself?   With your parent’s help and permission, try to create

  • a sea creature
  • a boat or a bird
  • something colorful!

You can use items from your own recycling bin or marine debris that you’ve collected and cleaned properly. 

Marine Debris Art Contests

Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs have an art contest happening right now with the theme, Climate Hope: Transforming Crisis.  The deadline is June 15 so you still have a few weeks to create your masterpiece!  Watch the video above and visit their website for more information.

Contest Overview

NOAA creates a calendar every year featuring art from kids in kindergarten through 8th grade.  The contest doesn’t open until the fall, but it’s not too early to start creating!  You can also download the 2020 calendar, which includes some coloring activities.
